Experience a Civil War Reenactment at the Naper Settlement

If you haven’t visited Naper Settlement to learn about 19th-century life in a Midwestern town, you need to add it to your “to do” list! Admission is always free for Naperville residents; just bring proof such as a driver’s license or a utility bill. With the weather warming up, the settlement is moving to summer hours, which gives you more opportunity to check it out.

Here’s what you should know before you go!

The Naper Settlement was originally a pioneer outpost which turned into a thriving community in the late 1800s. In the 1930s, Caroline Martin Mitchell wanted to preserve her family’s mansion, so she donated it to the City of Naperville. The entire mansion and a carriage house has been restored and are now part of the Settlement.

The village has been brought to life with the addition of several buildings. Everything has been made possible with the Naperville Historical Society which formed in 1969. In 2011, they were able to make the Settlement more environmentally friendly, and they plan to add more buildings in the future.

Civil War Days

This year’s Civil War Days will be held on May 18 and 19. Unfortunately, free admission for residents does not include special events. You can purchase your ticket in advance online or at the gate. Your $15 ticket covers all of the exciting events, though. “Meet” Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln, watch the battle at 2:30, shop at “Sutler’s Row,” and have your vintage photograph taken.

No outside food or drink is allowed, but there will be plenty of vendors to choose from. This is a great event for all ages and you don’t want to miss it!

Other Events

The Settlement puts on several other fun events throughout the year. Every summer they host the Naper Nights concert series. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and grab a bite from a local food truck.
