Running is a great way to stay in shape while enjoying the area’s picturesque scenery. If you would like to lace up your running shoes, the best trails around Naperville include:
Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve Trail
With ravines, wetland potholes, and glacier-carved rock ridges, it’s no wonder that Waterfall Glen is one of the most ecologically impressive open spaces in northern Illinois. Some of the preserve’s most scenic areas offer a combined eleven miles of trails.
Along the way, runners see prairie and grassland habitats as well as planted pine groves.
Virgil L. Gilman Trail
The Virgil L. Gilman Trail links a woodsy community college campus with the eastern Chicago suburb of Montgomery. It runs along two former railroad lines including the Chicago, Aurora, and DeKalb Railroad which chugged through the area between 1906 and 1923.
Runners will head into the Bliss Woods Forest Preserve where they’ll find towering trees, cardinals, and downy woodpeckers.
Illinois Prairie Path
Established in 1963, the Illinois Prairie Path was the first successful rails-to-trails conversion in North America. The trail spans approximately 61 miles through Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties, and was once the right-of-way for the old Chicago Aurora & Elgin electric railroad.
In addition to the stunning scenery, the Illinois Prairie Path also features comfort stations, informational showcases, and interpretive signs.
Hidden Lake Forest Preserve Trail
Nestled in nearby Downers Grove, the Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is where visitors can hear spring peepers in the wooded ponds. More than two miles of trails wander through the preserve, and they’re surrounded by dozens of trees and colorful wildflowers. Runners and hikers will cross bridges and see a variety of wildlife.
